Oil cleanup bosses should lighten up on locals
This should give outsiders an idea of the effects of a large oil spill clean up as is occuring in our region. Unfortunate that we can't be free of our reliance on fossil fuels. These fuels are a necessary evil with the current lack of economical alternatives however. I am not opposed to drilling in wildlife sanctuaries, but I am for more strict regulations for the transport of these fuels. It may seem these two views do not jive, but our reliance on foreign oil is far more painful to me than our reliance on fossil fuels. My daily bicycle trip to work is doing my own part to curb this reliance, but I do own a gas powered vehicle to get me there faster, warmer and drier, or to carry me longer distances.
I believe we can be nature lovers and concerned for the environment without banning oil drilling or harming our economy. Technological advances should allow for safe drilling in wildlife sanctuaries. Safety advances (double walled hulls on oil barges) on our oceans should allow for the protection of our coast lines, sea life and fisheries.

Plans for a ban on hand held cell phone use while driving will be brought to the Massachusetts State House tomorrow.
It is about time that the state of Massachusetts take action on the issue of cell phone use by motor vehicle operators. With the advent of hands-free technologies there are no more excuses.
I have been stuck behind numerous drivers whose speed fluctuated according to the tempo of their phone conversations. I know this based on head and hand movements. With speed so easily affected by conversations, it follows that reaction times and one's overall awareness are diminished as well. Unnecessary distractions on our increasingly travelled road ways should be top priority. Our friends' and relatives' lives may depend on it.
I encourage support of any measures that eliminate these daily hazards from our road and highway experience.
