The Weathercock

Why is the figure of a cock used in many weather vanes?
By a papal enactment made in the middle of the ninth century, the figure of the cock was set up on every church steeple as the symbol of St. Peter. It is an allusion to his denial of Christ thrice before the cock crew twice. A person who is always changing his or her mind is, figuratively, a weathercock.

The Cycling Recycler

It was the tricycle that caught my eye, of course, but I lured Falmouth's dumpster diving, cycling recycler over to get rid of the half year's worth of empty bottles and cans that have been piling up. I snapped a few photos, and it was then that an idea occured to me. It might be fun (and hopefully interesting) to take at least one photo a day in the coming year. I got an early start on this new challenge today, and here are some of the results.

Vinnie from Indy

I woke up with this image in my head of this rabid, serial Bush hater in his dark, hidden lair. I could not help but reproduce the image... I pictured him/her as more of a Gollum like creature slumped at his/her computer desk, surrounded by newspaper clippings, but this came out close.

The Wind Farm Debate Heats Up

You can tell the debate is heating up when the stars throw their hats into the ring. Snow Miser and Heat Miser, of The Year Without a Santa Claus fame, were seen out on the town this week in their respective pro and anti-wind farm goggles. Future debates between the two are planned, as soon as they can stop indiscriminately hurling icicles and fire balls at each other.

The Day After the December Niner Storm

This was the view that greeted us in the front yard the day after the storm, on Saturday morning.

Trees dangling from electrical wires were a common sight. This tree hung here for four days. Unfortunately, the person's yard across from this tree became the new lane of travel around the obstruction.

Red-Tailed Hawk

I spotted this immature, Red-Tailed Hawk hunting sparrows behind the Hearth & Kettle restaurant in Falmouth last week. The raptor community prefers the vittles outside Hearth & Kettle to their traditional menu offerings.
